‘my winter garden’ quilt

Another Christmas present, this time a lap quilt for hubby’s mum, made in double quick time!
my winter garden

The December 2013 issue of Popular Patchwork has an idea by Brenda Dean and Janet Richardson using charm squares. Basically, you make a central square using 25 patches then make a second square using 25 patches where the 9 patches across the diagonals are in a contrasting colour (all the same). The second square is cut into four across the diagonals and the sections added to each side of the  first square. Then you get a quilt centre ‘on point’ with a triangle border. To finish add extra borders as liked. Simples!

I had two Moda ‘Field Notes’ charm packs but as Mum likes warm autumn shades I picked out the florals and other suitable squares and added a few extra ones in warmer greens and pinks from my stash. The centre part still looked a little cool when completed but the addition of the floral and tan borders did the trick. For the backing I used brushed cotton in a small floral pattern.

I wanted this quilt to be soft and snuggly so added minimal quilting – I stitched ‘in the ditch’ around the squares and border edges then added ‘my winter garden’ all around the outer border in FMQ.
